Himri "Himri" (Tempe, AZ USA) - I call this Neopolitan cause like the icecream has slices of fiction by not 3 but 29 writers. This collection of different stories introduces us to different cultures through new words in italics like santeria. 'Nellie' by Roberto G fernandez has many bouts of good imagination. With his description of something as trivial as an open suitcase, he has driven home a point 'why write?'. 'Tito's Good Bye' by Cristina Garcia is well written. A story on a granny visiting a school girl in a city brings about differences one finds in such a situation. Each chapter has a brief description about the author and his/her works. With this half your research of 'which other work of the author to read' and 'whats the next book' is already done for you.

Laura Torrespico (Chicago, U.S.) - This is an excellent anthology of short stories written by Latino authors from many different countries. Not only are the short stories themselves entertaining, but they give insight into what it is like for each particular Latino culture to assimilate in America. What it is like to be a Cuban is not the same for a Mexican in America, and a Puerto Rican and so on. Even though some of the Latino cultures appear similar, there are major differences that are not obvious to mainstream America. In this book of short stories, you will find consistent topics that can be shared by everyone Latino or not. Anyone who is interested in the differences between Latino cultures in America should read this book because they are not all the same. Besides, the stories are great.

The book of the week is Angry Women by a collection of 16 performance artists.

These women discuss a wide range of topics - from menstruation, masturbation, vibrators, S&M and spanking to racism, failed Utopias and the death of the Sixties. Armed with total contempt for dogm, stereotype and cliche, these creative visionaries probe deep into our social foundation of taboos, beliefs and totalitarian linguistic contradictions from whence spring (as well as thwart) our theories, imaginings, behavior and dreams.

Identity Forum

Next, we present OMA's Identity Forum's Series for this month titled: Women in Professional Roles – come meet and chat with women who have followed their career goals to the top!

Hear them speak about their own personal journeys to where they are now and learn about some of the road-blocks and help they have seen along the way. Audience members will have a chance to ask the panelists questions at the end.

Private dinner planned to precede the event in the Andrew Commons from 6-7pm. You must RSVP to Rose Wasielewski by March 29th to attend the dinner as space is limited.

This week's book is titled: God Is Red: A Native view of Relegion By Vine Deloria, JR., author of Custer Died for Your SIns.

God Is Red is a nonfiction book that discusses traditional Native American religious views, particularly their relation to Western Christianity. It also details the hardships faced by Native Americans as their country was quickly flooded with foreigners eager for land and other resources.

Vagina Monologues

Wanna be a part of the Lawrence Chapter of V-Day’s production of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES?
Of course you do!
Come check out the auditions:

Sunday, Feb 7th from 7-9pm in the WCC Esch Studio
Monday, Feb 8th from 7-9pm in the WCC Hurvis Room

You do NOT have to have a monologue prepared – you can read from the script. If you already have in mind what monologues/parts you are interested in, that would be helpful! No acting or theatre experience required! Anyone can help with this production who wants to, so don’t be shy and stop by the auditions.

If you want to audition and are unable to stop by the audition times, you must make a separate meeting time before 9pm on Monday as we will be deciding the cast list at that time. If you want to help out in any way but cannot stop by during the above audition times, PLEASE contact me as soon as possible to chat.

This week's book is titled: "Spirit Capture - Photographs from the National Museum of the American Indian," edited by Tim Johnson.

Plans for New Garden

OMA and SLUG are currently working on reserving the lot next to Greenfire and the Diversity Center for a vegetable/herb garden, potentially to include flowers and an aesthetic design for diverse music groups that like to practice on that lot.

Hopefully we can get the permission and start in the Spring! :-)
